The MTV Europe Music Awards is always a place to spot fashion-forward celebs taking a risk in the style stakes.

It might have been the MTV awards but the night was as much about the fashion as it was about the music. With the A-listers out in force both on and off the stage, all eyes were on what the famous names were wearing.

Both Kanye West and English songstress Leona Lewis rushed to celebrity favourite Cricket, with their stylists to pick up knockout attire for the big night.

Both nominated for awards, which Kanye took but Lewis just missed once again, the pair said they had been caught short of time and wanted something special for the night.

Just hours before gracing the red carpet the X Factor superstar dashed into the store and met owner Justine Mills who was desperately trying to pick something out.

"She was rushing off to rehearsals in the afternoon and couldn't decide what to choose, so we delivered a few to her hotel room."

She eventually settled on a Marchesa dress which set the singer back Dh16,096.

"She was really lovely, really shy and polite and kept saying thank you for all we were doing."

Rapper Kanye West was another big name who headed to Cricket and always fashion-conscious was determined to make an impression.

Tourist pilgrimage

Initially looking for white trousers, Kanye's stylist was disappointed so opted for a full Balenciaga suit which set him back Dh5,748. The stylist was back in the shop an hour later for ties and bow ties.

In a bid to stay incognito most stars would don a baseball cap or fake beard — but Killers frontman Brandon Flowers did the opposite and shaved his infamous moustache to avoid the fan rush.

"I can't believe it's made such a difference. I've been wandering round doing the tourist thing with no hassle at all," he laughed.

"I've been on a real tourist pilgrimage because I believe everyone here owes everything to the Beatles. It blew me away seeing the houses they lived in and to see Paul McCartney in the town where it all started, wow, now that is something else."

Killer Katy

Katy Perry, taking care of the hosting duties, had no less than 12 costume changes in the two-hour-long show. The songstress had plenty of sass, starting the show dressed as an American football player, launched through the stage set astride a giant cherry chapstick.

She certainly didn't disappoint when it came to her choice in fashion creations. Known for her quirky dress sense, Perry rattled through an array of outfits, from a glittery dress with an image of Obama's face on it, to a frock with a fully-working fairground carosel as the skirt, and a pink number with her own name stuck on the front in giant silver letters.

The fruity singer was hoisted on a giant banana, stood on top of two huge cherries and was even balanced on the bar of the celebrity VIP area.
