In its efforts to raise student awareness about critical world issues, Dubai Women's College (DWC) recently marked World Food Day on campus. Students collected food and donated it to charity organisations in order to help needy people in the UAE.
World Food Day is an international event which the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations celebrates annually to focus world attention on agricultural food production, encourage women's participation in decisions influencing their living conditions and support worldwide efforts against hunger, poverty and malnutrition.
This year's World Food Day theme focuses on "the challenges of climate change and bio-energy". The event's programme at the college included encouraging teachers to raise the issue of hunger and malnutrition in classrooms to help students gain a better understanding of an issue affecting millions of people. Students organised several events including a bake sale and canned-food collection. Alongside this collection of food, students from the Higher Diploma Foundations year organised an exhibition on food waste, which brought up some alarming statistics on world hunger.
Students were also introduced to www.freerice.com, a sister site of www.poverty.com which was created for people who wish to fight poverty and hunger. On the site, students answered questions that tested their literary skills. As they answer questions correctly they see a bowl on the right of the screen fill up with rice. The rice is then donated by the UN World Food Programme.
This year, the Social Responsibility Fund at the Ministry of Social Affairs and Beit Al Khair Society joined the college in its inaugural event during which donated food items was collected from the college and distributed to needy people in the UAE.
