Two students from the Electrical Engineering Department of the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi, UAE, won the wireless technology competition in an international competition launched by Honeywell, a technology and manufacturing company.
Mohammad Tamer Shaklab and Mohammad Abdul Jaleel Mohammad presented their winning project, titled The Future Impact of Wireless Technology in the Process Industry, in front of a lice audience at Honeywell EMERA Users Group 2008 Conference, was held in Bahrain.
Their project detailed the potential wireless represents for the industry and for the people using it everyday.
"We prepared a presentation about the future impact of wireless technology in the process industry. We chose the oil as a resource to be processed," he said.
He said that his group did not expect to win but decided to participate because it was an interesting prospect. "It was attractive because first, it is a worldwide competition that we were part of; second, it is related to our studies in engineering," he said.
The project
"We discussed what is wireless technology, sources industry and the uses of wireless technology in this industry. It is not yet used because it is not reliable and secure but we are trying to explore the future possibilities and implement this technology," he said.
Difficulties
The project involved much hard work on the part of the students. "We were competing against universities and technical schools from Europe, the Middle East and Africa," said Shaklab. "We had difficulties in understanding protocols of the wireless because we don't have a background in telecommunications so we read a lot and interviewed several professors who gave us a lot of help and information," Mohammad said.
The students also surveyed engineers as part of their research. "We did a survey among engineers in three national oil companies in the UAE and we asked engineers about whether they use wireless, where, its limitations and how we can improve it. It gave a great boost to our project," he said.
Unique experience
Mohammad said that it was a nice experience that he learned a lot from. "It will help me a lot in my studies and give me an idea what the future is about. Going to Berlin was very nice," he said.
After graduation, the students are going to work with Adnoc for at least five years. The institute finances their studies on condition that they work with them after graduation. "The celebration party for us was nice and we felt very proud," Shaklab said.
