Dubai: Six men have been accused of using hard objects and sharp handmade-weapons to beat a detainee, who claims he was assaulted for refusing to have sex with them in confinement.
The six suspects, aged between 21 and 40, were said to have ganged up against the Emirati detainee and assaulted him with different objects inside the police detention in November 2013.
Prosecutors accused the six defendants of beating and assaulting the detainee with a sharpened broomstick, a metal plate, small knife, nail cutter and their hands and legs and caused him a 25 per cent permanent disability.
The six were identified as two from Comoros Islands, an Omani, an Iranian, an Emirati and one who does not hold any personal identification papers.
None of the defendants showed up before the Dubai Court of First Instance where they were supposed to enter a plea on Sunday.
Jail wardens did not bring two of the suspects, who are serving time in Dubai Central Jail.
Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi cancelled the bails of the remaining four and issued arrest warrants.
“The remaining four will be arrested and forwarded to attend the upcoming hearing on March 8,” said presiding judge Al Shamsi in court.
The Emirati detainee testified to prosecutors that he was in bed when the defendants stormed into the cell at the detention centre.
“I was assaulted by 11 men, including the defendants, at 10pm although I did not have any disagreements or grudges with any of them. When they walked into the cell, one of them said that I was arrogant and behaved like a boss in confinement. They said wanted to have sex with me… but I told them that I was not a homosexual... Suddenly they surrounded me and assaulted me. They kicked me in my face and removed all my clothes and sprinkled hot water and urine on me. One of them assaulted me with a nail cutter, while another suspect assaulted me with a sharpened plate. They also beat me with a broomstick… they also shaved my hair. I was also punched and kicked brutally. They broke my jaw and three teeth. I had severe bruises and injuries all over my body during the assault that lasted nearly three hours. I collapsed on the ground…,” claimed the detainee.
Dubai Police’s forensic medicine report confirmed that the detainee lost the capability to chew properly and his left ear was injured and his upper and lower jaws were fractured.
Records said the detainee was hospitalised for nearly two weeks and underwent several surgeries.
Only one suspect was quoted admitting that he assaulted the detainee.
Besides the Emirati detainee’s statement, records did not mention why the latter was assaulted.
