Abu Dhabi: Authorities banned around 489 motorists from driving for three months during the past nine months (January 1 to September 30).

Motorists’ driving licences were confiscated for committing several traffic offences that added up to a cumulative 24 traffic points, which lead to a temporary ban on driving and vehicle licence confiscation, said the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police in a press release issued on Sunday.

Brigadier Ahmad Abdullah Al Shehi, deputy director of the Directorate of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police, warned that those whose licences have been suspended should not drive any vehicle during the three-month suspension period.

“Any motorist banned from driving by court order or licensing authority, will be imprisoned for a period not exceeding three months and fined an amount not less than Dh5,000, in accordance with the traffic points registration system under article No (50) of the Federal Law No 21 of 1995 which was amended by Federal Law No 12 of 2007,” he said.

“About 72 violations are listed in this law, in which traffic points are registered against motorists’ offences, in addition to a fiscal fine, with 24 points as the maximum violation and two points the minimum violation,” Brig Al Shehi explained.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving a vehicle with no number plate, truck drivers swerving or overtaking in a dangerous way and fleeing an accident scene that resulted in casualties are the four violations in which the driver’s licence is confiscated immediately, as each of the four offences has 24 traffic points.”

“Another six traffic offences in which 12 traffic points are registered are driving the vehicle in a way that poses a danger to road users’ lives or speeding on the roads.”

“Motorists jumping the red light get eight traffic points as well as a monetary fine,” he added.

A cumulative of 24 traffic points on a driver’s licence leads to licence and vehicle confiscation and fines.
