Dubai: Bigger, better and presenting cutting-edge innovative technologies, the 40th Arab Health Exhibition and Congress was officially inaugurated by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Shaikh Mohammad, who was accompanied by Shaikh Maktoum Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, toured the exhibition halls and stands spread over an area of more than 14,000 square metres. Abbul Rahman Mohammad Al Owais, UAE Minister of Health and other dignitaries were also present.

Shaikh Maktoum unveiled the logo for the new medical university which will open at Dubai HealthCare City.

Shaikh Mohammad stopped at the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) pavilion and inquired about the newly rolled out medical tourism packages at DHA hospitals.

Dr Manal Al Taryam, CEO of Primary Health Care at DHA, told Gulf News: “His Highness Shaikh Mohammad has enquired about the medical tourism packages we introduced in the field of LASIK eye surgery, fertility treatments and wellness.”

Eisa Al Maidour, DHA Director-General, said: “Arab Health has seen an exponential growth and we are pleased to extend our support to this event year on year. At the end of the day, innovation in the health sector leads to better patient outcomes.”

The event, which runs until Thursday, has over 4,000 exhibitors and will see the attendance of 120,000 people. It has a strong focus on smart and innovative technologies that have globally revolutionised the health sector.

Among some of the notable innovations are the diagnostic systems for screening infants as young as two days old for metabolic and genetic diseases presented by Trivitron from India and its Finnish partner Labsystems diagnostics.

Geraldine Carrard, CEO of the company, said: “Many early screenings which are mandatory in Europe are now going to be made mandatory in the UAE and this is where our equipment will come in handy. The test requires just a drop of dried blood that is extracted via a syringe from the baby’s foot and it screens the infant for conditions such as thyroid, cystic fibrosis and phelyketonuria (a genetic disorder) to name a few. Many of these illnesses can be either managed better or totally cured with early intervention. Undetected thyroid condition can actually cause mental retardation in children.”

The Ministry of Health unveiled three minimally invasive robotic surgeries for the heart that would drastically reduce recovery time and it also introduced a contrast CT scan for the heart which can capture a complete 3D image of the heart within a second.

The American Hospital Dubai announced today the launch of its first primary care clinic. The hospital’s new Dubai Media City Clinic (DMCC) will begin welcoming patients from February 2. Commenting on the new clinic, American Hospital Dubai’s CEO Peter Makowski said: “American Hospital Dubai has always been a pioneer in private health care and our new Dubai Media City Clinic continues this tradition.”

“This is the first in a series of primary care clinics that we plan to open in Dubai, as satellites to our growing hospital campus, all delivering the same quality of care with expert teams of board-certified specialists,” he added.
