Dubai: Three men have been accused of assaulting a building supervisor and stealing his mobile when he tried to stop them from pestering neighbours and smoking in the corridor.

The three Moroccan men — a tourist guide, a jobless man and an accountant — were said to be involved in a fight with a neighbour when the Egyptian supervisor went up to them and asked them to stop in August.

When the supervisor asked the trio to stop pestering neighbours, according to records, and to refrain from smoking in the corridor, the trio assaulted him and took away his mobile when he tried to call the police. They also took away his chain and fled.

Prosecutors charged the trio with assaulting the supervisor and stealing his phone and chain.

The Moroccans pleaded not guilty and firmly rejected their accusations when they appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Monday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the suspects punched the Egyptian and stole his mobile worth Dh800 worth and silver chain worth Dh600. “No, we did not do that,” the tourist guide told presiding judge Urfan Omar.

The supervisor claimed to prosecutors that residents had complained to him that the trio were involved in a fight on the eighth floor at the residential tower in Al Nahda.

“When I checked the surveillance cameras, I spotted the suspects fighting … I went up to the floor to stop them fighting. They were also smoking. Once I asked them to stop fighting and smoking, the jobless suspect cursed me loudly. Then when I took out my phone to call the police, he head-butted me while the guide took away my phone. Then they assaulted me while the accountant immobilised me. Once they fled, I realised that they had stolen my phone and chain… then I was rushed to hospital,” the Egyptian testified to prosecutors.

An Indian security guard, who had accompanied the supervisor to the eighth floor, testified to prosecutors that the suspects were drunk when the incident happened.

The trial continues.
