Dubai: Two men who stole 2kg of honey, phone accessories, bracelets and rings from four separate shops when they worked as cleaners at Global Village were jailed for three months each.

The Pakistani cleaners, 21-year-old M.A. and 30-year-old S.M., stole honey and several items from different shops at the Yemeni Pavilion in March.

The Dubai Appeal Court rejected the convicts’ appeal to reduce their three-month imprisonment and upheld the primary judgement.

Presiding judge Saeed Salem Bin Sarm also confirmed that the duo will be deported following the completion of their punishments.

The duo had pleaded guilty and sought a reduced punishment when they appeared before the appellate court.

In June, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted M.A. and S.M. of abusing their jobs and stealing from their workplace.

A Yemeni businessman, who had a kiosk at Global Village, saw M.A. wearing a silver ring with a turquoise stone while he was cleaning his kiosk, said records.

When the businessman asked M.A. to give him the ring to check, the cleaner disappeared shortly after handing him the ring.

The businessman went to warn the owners of others kiosks at the Global Village before it was later discovered that M.A. and his countryman S.M. had stolen items from four other kiosks.

The Pakistani duo are being tried in four separate theft cases.

In one case, prosecutors said the defendants stole three phone covers worth Dh120.

In another case, prosecutors said M.A. and S.M. stole three bracelets worth Dh100.

Meanwhile in this case, the two accused were convicted of stealing 2kg of honey worth Dh300.

Prosecutors said the defendants stole three silver rings worth Dh600 in a fourth case.

Court records said the defendants stole from four different kiosks between 7pm and 10pm before the businessman saw one of them wearing a stolen ring.

The appellate ruling remains subject to appeal before the Cassation Court within 15 days.
