Abu Dhabi: The number of traffic fines issued for speeding has gone down by 17 per cent in Abu Dhabi since a 50 per cent discount on fines was cancelled two months ago.

Compared to June and July, the past two months — August and September — witnessed a decline in the number of fines issued for traffic offences, said a press release issued by Abu Dhabi Police on Wednesday.

A 17 per cent decline in fines for speeding, a 13 per cent decline in tailgating offences (not leaving enough distance between vehicles while driving) and a 17 per cent decline in sudden deviation were recorded during the past two months.

The past two months also witnessed a decline in motorists overtaking from the right lane and driving heavy vehicles without adequate safety and security measures.

However, the number of fines for using phones while driving has gone up slightly.

The order cancelling the 50 per cent discount on traffic fines came into effect in August.

Colonel Mohammad Salem Al Shehi, head of fines and vehicle confiscation department at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate in Abu Dhabi Police, urged motorists to abide by traffic laws in order to ensure safety for all road users and avoid traffic accidents caused by speeding.

“The decision to cancel the 50 per cent reduction on fines has helped enhance safety for all road users,” Al Shehi added.
