Abu Dhabi: A 14-kilometre stretch along the new Mafraq-Ghweifat highway has been completed by the Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada).

The completed section stretches towards Ghweifat, and is part of the first phase of package B1 of the Dh5.3-billion project. Package B1 itself is expected to cost Dh592 million, Musanada announced in a statement on Wednesday.

The entire 327-kilometre-long highway is expected to be completed in mid-2017, it added.

When finished, the highway will connect Mafraq area in Abu Dhabi to Barakah area in the Western Region, close to the UAE-Saudi Arabia border. Work on the project started in March 2014.

Saif Al Hameli, acting chief executive officer of Musanada, said the highway will enhance the UAE’s transport infrastructure, and raise road safety. It will also improve vehicular connectivity between the UAE and the Gulf.

The construction of the highway is divided into six packages. The 182-kilometre section from Mafraq to Baynounah forest will consist of two to four lanes in each direction, while the 64-kilometre stretch from Ghweifat to Barakah will have two to three lanes in each direction.
