Sharjah: A 12-year-old girl fell to her death from the balcony of her third floor apartment in Sharjah Tuesday evening.

The Indian girl identified as S.S, died on the spot after falling down from a chair placed in the balcony.

The accident is the latest in a disturbing trend of children falling to their deaths from high-rises in the emirate and the UAE.

A Sharjah Police official said the girl was living with her family in a six storey building in Al Ghuwair area of Sharjah.

He said a team from Al Gharb police station, forensic experts and paramedics rushed immediately to the scene of the incident after the police operation room received the distress call.

The body was sent to Hospital and then to the forensic laboratory. It will be handed over to the parents after completing formalities.

Police are investigating whether it was an accident or a case of suicide.

Sharjah Police have issued an appeal to parents to ensure their children are always under supervision and urged them not to place movable items under windows or balconies, while closely monitoring access to balconies.

Police said parents will be summoned for questioning later.
