Dubai: A housemaid has been accused of risking the life of her sponsor’s 10-month-old baby when she left him unattended while the cooker was on and fled.

The 30-year-old Indonesian housemaid allegedly stole cash and valuables from her sponsor’s residence and ran away in November 2011.

The Egyptian mother had left her baby with the housemaid, according to records, and went to pick up her older son from school at noon.

Available records did not mention when, how or where the Indonesian housemaid was apprehended.

Prosecutors accused the 30-year-old of risking the baby’s life and robbing her sponsor.

The suspect pleaded guilty when she appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the suspect endangered the baby’s life when she ran away from the flat and left him alone while the cooker was on. She was also accused of stealing around Dh2,000 in cash, a ring worth Dh2,500, a purse and a pair of sports shoe.

When asked about her demands in court, the suspect asked presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi to fly her back home.

The 33-year-old mother claimed to prosecutors that she left her baby with the housemaid and went to pick up her son from school.

“When I returned home, the flat’s door was locked. I used my keys to open it. The smell of cooked food was all over the place … I went to the kitchen and switched off the cooker. When I searched for the housemaid, I couldn’t find her. My 10-month-old baby was sleeping in his bed. Then I went to her bedroom to check and discovered that she had taken her belongings and absconded. She also stole several valuables that I had hidden in my bedroom. I complained to the police and accused the housemaid of having endangered my son’s life by leaving him alone and unattended,” she testified to prosecutors.

The Indonesian suspect was quoted as confessing to prosecutors that she stole her sponsor’s sports shoe and Dh800.

She was also cited as admitting that she risked the baby’s life when she left him by himself in the flat.

Presiding judge Al Shamsi will hand out a ruling on November 27.
